Working flat out

Do you start the day all scrunched up and feeling in need of a good stretch? Or are you the type that would happily stay curled up all day?

For me, it always starts the same way. A moment of calm before the day's unfurling. A glare of lights. The Zoom session starts and we're off. Two bare feet, hip-width apart. Standing exercises first. Warming up, preparing.

Next, it's often sitting exercises, legs stretched - sometimes crossed (they feel very different to me, I can assure you!) - as the intensity gradually increases. When the lying down part arrives, it's almost a relief. Then spinal articulation: vertebrae rolling up and down "like beads on a string" (oh, how many times have I heard that?). Now hands behind head, knuckles making little indentations. Oh, I don't mind. They disappear soon enough.

The side-lying exercises are OK. The occasional hip bone digging in, but that's only temporary and, as he says, you can always use a blanket or cushion for extra padding if you wish (though he never does).

No, that's all fine. It's the last 15 minutes that are the hardest to bear. Rolling like a Ball? Think rolling pin with me as the pastry. As for the Teaser...a bit too much bottom-pressing for my taste, I don't mind telling you. And then I get trodden on again.

Still, it's all over pretty soon. I get rolled up before rejoining my multi-coloured friends, who all want to know how my day was. I always tell them that it was great, how my contribution was valued and what a pleasure it was to be playing a part in bringing health and vitality to so many people.

I know I have a lot of fans around the world. I mean, how many Pilates mats get to be seen in multiple towns, cities, countries and continents simultaneously? I would blush, though I usually leave that to the pink one.

I'll be putting in a few special guest appearances next week, so if you'd like to come and see a humble mat playing a vital supporting role, why not join one of my online Pilates classes?

I mean, it's not called Pilates matwork for nothing, is it?

Matt
