The heat is on

I'm biting my lip. I know you don't want me to say it. You'll blame me when it changes and there's rain for 40 days and nights (again). But I can't stop myself.

It's too hot for me.

There, I said it. Yes, I know that I complained about the long, drawn-out, chilly spring and kept saying "When, oh when will I finally be able to put my winter jumpers away?". I should know better than to wish for things.

I simply don't like it this hot but, as the youth say, it is what it is. So what can we do to make this hellish inferno more bearable? Well, one strategy is to not go anywhere. (That's my preferred approach.) It's just too hot to travel, either under glass or (heaven forfend) underground.

Where would you go anyway? None of the trains are working because of the bank holiday. All of the roads in London have been closed by Thames Water. Anyone who attempted to leave the country will by now be repenting their foolishness in an interminable queue, as foreign passport inspectors look on and smirk.

So what to do? Well, there's always online Pilates at home. You might like to know that I will be teaching my usual 3pm class on Bank Holiday Monday. I have switched to my hot weather repertoire, where we stay cool(ish) by doing more stretching and avoiding anything too energetic. You might be surprised by how strengthening some of the slowest, tiniest Pilates movements can be.

Because you can do my online classes from home, you don't need to step outside into the blazing sunshine. Stay indoors, pour yourself a long glass of iced water from the fridge and join me. And if you do start to feel the heat, after the class you can stand in front of the open fridge and have a Cornetto. (That's my other approach.)

Of course, if you simply can't face doing anything in this heat and just want to lie down in a darkened room, don't forget that you can always request a recording of the class to do in the cooler hours.
