Time off

The glorious spring weather in the UK is persuading many of us that it's summer already. It isn't. There are Bank Holidays (aka public holidays) coming up and long-established British tradition requires that the weather takes a corresponding downturn, so that nobody can enjoy them.

When I was a child, time off from work was virtually written into the calendar. Lots of shops didn't open on Mondays, to give shopworkers a day off in lieu of working on Saturdays. Virtually nobody except vicars worked on Sundays. On Wednesdays, most shops closed at midday, known as "half day closing".

That all seems terribly antiquated now, in these days of 24-hour service. Sundays are no longer the shopping-free haven they used to be. We assume there will always be someone willing to work, any time, any day. Bank Holidays, originally introduced to force employers to give workers much-needed time off, still exist but are not as sacrosanct as they once were. Much as we enjoy time off, we also like the option to do our usual activities.

Which is why I will be teaching my usual online Pilates matwork class on Monday. However, perhaps as a throwback to an earlier, gentler age, I have decided to take a day off in lieu. This coming Thursday, 8 May, I will be away, taking a short break on the Suffolk coast.

I like traditions. It also feels rather satisfying when modern technology helps us observe those traditions, so, because I don't want anyone to miss out, recorded classes will be available for anyone who wishes to do Pilates on Thursday. It's the best of both worlds: I get a day off; you still get the top-quality Pilates you have come to expect.

If you book in the normal way for a Thursday class, you will receive a specially pre-recorded version of the class. The link to the recording will arrive before the usual start time, so you could even do the class at the regular time if you wish.

Perhaps I will see you at one of my online classes? Or maybe you'll just see me on Thursday... Either way, you can go to the online classes page of my website to book.
