Tariff-fic online Pilates classes

If there is one thing that the current rollercoaster of global trade perfectly illustrates, it's that we all crave stability.

When I heard about the largest stock market fall since 2020, it got me thinking about the start of the pandemic almost exactly five years ago. At the time, I remember quoting the Hollywood scriptwriter William Goldman that "nobody knows anything", which seemed a good summation of those days.

Goldman's quote doesn't necessarily imply ignorance or lack of expertise, but rather the inherent uncertainty and unpredictability in the creative industries and beyond. It suggests that even with the best intentions and expertise, there's no guarantee of success.

And so it was, in April 2020, that I started teaching my first online Pilates classes. Necessity being the mother of invention (another quote - thanks Plato), I learnt to use Zoom (which I had never even heard of before), set up a camera, computer, TV monitor, innumerable cables and then, finally, a booking system. It was almost at the last minute that I had to figure out how much to charge, eventually opting for a nice round £10 for a 60-minute class (£12 for a 75-minute class).

The classes turned out to be more popular than I ever imagined. So popular that, if you have a long memory, you might remember that after a while I decided to drop the prices by £1, to say thank you to all the wonderful people who decided to join me online. And there the prices have stayed.

Since 2020, inflation has steadily pushed up prices in just about all areas. My online classes are one of the few things to have gone down. However, I can't absorb my increased costs for ever, so I have decided to put my prices up...to April 2020 levels.

From 1 May 2025, a 60-minute class will be £10 and a 75-minute class will be £12 - the same price as five years ago.

In case any of my overseas clients are wondering, you pay the same as UK residents. No tariffs for you!

Of course, if you like a bargain, I suppose you could always book every class for the rest of April to make the most of the current rate. I hope seasoned regulars and occasional visitors alike will join me at one of my online classes soon (and hopefully even after 1 May).
